MHI 1

July 25, 2009 By: Thor Category: Reading No Comments →

Do you remember the Steve Martin movie “The Jerk”?  The main character gets listed in the phone book, and when it is published he screams,  “The new phone book’s here, the new phone book’s here! ….  I am somebody”.

Well the new “re-released” Monster Hunter’s International is here.  Amazon is shipping, some book stores have it on the shelf and the author is stoked.  It’s been a long time coming but it is finally out in mass market paperback.  Now, I read it a year or more ago when it was self published.  It is one of those books that hooks you in the first couple of pages and never let’s you go.  I have re-read it a couple of times and am looking forward to reading it again.  I am also looking forward to the sequel so we need to make it worth the publisher’s effort.  Get out there and buy a copy.  Suspend your disbeliefs and enjoy a fast moving tale that will keep the pages turning.

Congratulations Larry, I know you have been waiting a long time for this day!!

MHI Coming Soon

About 16 months ago, I ran across a book Monster Hunter’s International.  I hemmed and hawed about it, do I really want to read a book about Zombies that is written by a professed B Movie addict?  Well, I decided to give it a read and bought a copy from the author who was self publishing the book.

I started reading it, and couldn’t put it down.  It hooked you in the opening pages, and never let go.  Zombies?  Uh, not really… so much more than that.  So, I was hooked and have read through it a couple of times now.  Unfortunately, it is currently out of print and has been for about a year or so.  The author signed a contract with Baen and had to stop the self publishing cycle.  Well the release date is coming up at the end of July, and Baen has begun the marketing cycle.  Larry Correa reports that:

MHI is now available on Baen’s webscriptions. The first seven chapters are available for free. For something like $15 you can purchase the E version of my book, and FOUR others that are being released at the same time.  That is awesome.

So, get yourself out to read those first seven chapters.  Then pre-order that book from Amazon.  Larry has four (or more) other MHI books lined up behind this one if it sells well.  Selfishly I would really like to read them.

Monster Hunter International – Review

April 06, 2008 By: Thor Category: Reading No Comments →

I recently read Monster Hunter International by Larry Corriea. I have to tell you I waffled on buying this book. I mean I had this fear of Night of the Living Dead, Zombie Apocolypse stuff that was poorly written and didn’t fit into anything that interested me. But, I read some of the reviews and I picked up on Larry’s website and I thought I would take a shot at it. So, I duly brought up my Amazon account, and ordered the book. At the same time, I was ordering a bunch of other stuff so I thought of it as kind of a impulse buy.

Best impulse buy that I ever made. The book is a page turner, and one I had a hard time putting down. There is little or no, slow spots in the read. From the first few pages this thing moves the plot along quickly and efficiently, introducing characters as necessary and providing just the right level of detail to set the visuals of the situation.

Is the plot predictable? Maybe at times but for the most part it twists and turns, and just when you think it is going to go straight on for a bit, it pulls a wild left turn and zig zags all over the place.

Larry pulls in aspects of many different historical cultures and weaves them almost seamlessly into the story telling . Sorry Larry, there were a couple of abrupt points so you don’t get the full seamless comment. However, I think that they abruptness may have been appropriate to the scene on occasion.

I wish I could write a story that is half as entertaining, and half as well written.

This is a damn fine book that you need to go out and read.

Head over to Amazon and get yourself a copy. Do not be put off by the Out of Stock message, or the long lead time that Amazon will give you on your order. This is a Publish on Demand book, and I received mine in about 1/3 of the time that Amazon quoted.

I can’t wait until the next volume is published.

Hey Murdoc’s got a post up about a new book by Rick Perry, the governor of Texas. Looks like it will be an interesting read. I am thinking that we’ll see a Perry run for President in 2012?

Go read Murdoc’s post for more details
