Frontierswoman?

September 30, 2008 By: Thor Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

Over at American Thinker they pulled together an interesting article explaining why Sarah Palin is so successful right now.  Here is a taste:

When Sarah Palin appeared on the national stage, she was stepping into an archetype that already existed. In personality, looks, and behavior she resembled nothing less than our cultural image of the frontier woman.  She was something out of history — something that we already knew, were quite familiar with, and strongly approve of…

We have a clear image of what the frontier woman was like. Stalwart, stoic, tough, capable, but at the same time remaining feminine, deferring to the man but defying him when necessary…

Gun Shows

September 29, 2008 By: Thor Category: Culture, Gun Control No Comments →

Now I don’t do a whole lot of posting about shooting, or hunting, or fishing, or sailing.  But a do (or I have in my lifetime)  spend a fair amount of time participating in these and other activities.  So, I try and keep my toes in the water of issues and technology that impacts these interests of mine.

Today I ran across this post from a man in Texas.  I think you need to read the whole thing.

One of the best parts:

You, yes I mean you reading this right now. You scare the pants off of some folks with your guns and your independent attitude. How is the government going to take care of us all if you go and take care of yourself? It’s just not fair.

One Man’s Guide

The internet is a wonderful thing.  It has created a world in which everyone can publish their opinions, and have them discussed with varying degress of passion.  It does create some unusual articles, here is one of the latest that I stumbled across.

Fellow Americans, bloggers, and bitter gun clutchers: In the past tumultuous weeks, I have been asked:

“How does an educated man like yourself, a person of taste, culture, and intellect, a registered Independent since 1964, support the Republican ticket over the Democrat? How can you be a one-issue voter?”

Or, more directly: “Have you lost your f*****g mind?”

My friends, I am paid to write about guns, hunting, and politics as it applies to guns and hunting. My mandate does not extend further. Because of this, I’m a captive of circumstance. The Democrats nominated an atrocious pair of anti-gunners, and the Republicans nominated one neutral and possibly the strongest pro-gun candidate ever. All I can do is report on what they say; however, this does not mean I’ve ignored their other qualifications, or lack thereof. So, lest I be thought shallow and superficial, here is how I rank the four candidates, quite apart from firearms…

Presidential Debate

September 29, 2008 By: Thor Category: Presidential Politics No Comments →

So the candidates decided that they would conduct the debate on Friday after all.  What did I think of the debate?

Well I skipped it.  Watching through the eyes of the medias camera selection was just going to piss me off.  So, I scanned through the reviews, and I watched some clips.  Over at Chuck’s blog… he managed to summarize things pretty consistently with my views of the action:

Both said

  • “what I will do to fix the economy will work”
  • “what the other guy will do won’t work”

neither said

  • “I am going to call out, by name, the legally elected members of congress, and the democratic members of congress, and appointed members of gummint whose stupidity and corruption are key factors in our economic problems”
  • “I am going to sic the FBI, SEC, Homeland Security, and IRS/Treasury on the aforementioned officials to determine if they conducted any illegal activities, and as their actions could result in collapse of the US economy, declare their actions as a “clear and present danger” to the United States, and declare them enemies of the state and people if even ethical wrongdoing is found”
  • “I am going to make congress stay in session until they (the ones who hold the purse strings) fix it, and if they don’t fix it and excuse themselves, will fix it on my own by executive order.”

Obamaramadinijad said “Well, Senator McCain is absolutely right” something like eight times. Last I checked, when engaged in a debate, and your opponent constantly agrees with you, you’ve won.

Abuse of Non-Power (Missouri)

September 28, 2008 By: Thor Category: Presidential Politics No Comments →

Over the course of the Presidential campaign we have seen some interesting behavior from the Obama folks, everytime an ad runs that they don’t like.  They get on the phone and call the stations and “request” that the ad be pulled.  I imagine the conversation goes something like this:

Station Manger (SM):  Hello?

Obama Campaign (BHO):  This is XXXX from the Obama Campaign HQ.

SM:  What can I do for you today?

BHO:  Well you are running this new ad campaign from the XYZ group, and it is not too flattering to us.

SM:  Um, no it’s not.

BHO:  Well we believe in the freedom of speech, and support the constitutional rights of these folks but we need your help in making sure that the US people hear our message of Hope and Change.  These new ads from XYZ are in direct contradiction to our message.  We need your help in getting our message out.

SM:  So you would like to buy some competeing ad time.  Fantastic, we would love to help you.  Let me transfer you to my sales manager who can help set that up for you.

BHO:  Uh, no.  You misunderstand.  We would prefer that you not run messages that compete against us.

SM:  I am still not sure I understand.

BHO:  Ok, it might be best if you stopped running the XYZ ads.

SM:  Hmm.  Let me see, XYZ purchased time on my station and supplied us with an adverstisement that complies with all the regulatory requirements.  But, you would like us to stop selling these advertising spots.  You know, advertising is our business.  We only run entertainment to generate ad revenue.  That’s the name of the game.  I would be happy to sell you some time to rebut the XYZ ads but I will still sell that time to folks who want it.

BHO:  So you are refusing to comply with the wishes of The One?  You are standing as an obstacle to our path to office?

SM:  No, what I am saying is that you are welcome to buy competing ad time if you like.

BHO:  Let me be crystal clear.  We have asked you to pull the XYZ ads, and not allow them to buy additional time.  You are refusing.

SM:  For the reasons stated, yes.

BHO:  We will remember this when we are in office.  I am sure that your license is due for renewal sometime soon.  You take care now.

Now we have a number of stories coming out of Missouri where the BHO Campaign has enlisted government officials to stifle the communication of citizens that have opinions that differ from the BHO Campaign.  Hot Air has a nice breakdown of this here.

Since we are seeing this come out of the Governer’s office as well, I think there is some truth to the situation.

Fast forward to Febuary 2009, imagine if you will BHO being president (god forbid).  One of his first acts may be the repeal of the 1rst and 2nd Ammendments to The Constitution, and the inclusion of a Sharia court system as we see in UK.  Now that may seem a bit over the top, I hope it never occurs but the BHO as president scenario is very very frightening.
